What kind of meals should a Lap-Band® patient go for?

What kinds of meal should be avoided?

Is there any need of consuming liquids between meals?


As a Lap-Band® patient you should be very particular about your meal. You should not eat such food that can be injurious for your health. You must be having 3 meals in one day and the diet during the meal has to be solid. You should avoid snacking between the meals. Eating of chips, munching crackers etc is strictly prohibited in between the meals. Eating 3 meals a day would reduce your weight, burn down the necessary calories and you would then get rid of your obesity.




You must be consuming food that is nutritious and less in calorie intake like green vegetables, eggs, fresh fruits etc. You would have to consume large amount of pureed food. Apart from that you can have cheese, baked potatoes, macaroni, noodles etc during your meals. You can also have meat in your regular diet, but in small quantities. You need to chew the food well before you swallow it. Well chewed food would be easy for you to digest quickly.



There are many food products that are not suited for the Lap-Band® patients. Some of the food products that should be avoided by the Lap-Band® patients are: high calorie soft drinks, cakes and biscuits, sweets, jam, jelly, honey, chocolate, chips, pastries, high caffeine beverages etc. If you are alcoholic, then you should be consuming the intoxicants in a limited amount alcohol. Avoid those food that have high fat content like pizza, burgers etc. Restrict the use of fat to 3-4 tbsp of butter or oil per day. You should be avoiding carbonated beverages as well because there is a possibility of the enlargement of the stomach. you have to follow Lap-Band® diet prescribed by surgeon.




You should be consuming liquids between the meals otherwise you would feel dehydrated. It is advised that you should be consuming at least 6 cups of liquid between the meals. Some of the liquids that you can consume are skimmed milk, tea, coffee, diet soda etc. Some of the things that you need to remember while consuming liquids between the meals are:

  • Don't consume liquid at least 30 minutes before or after the meal
  • Sip the liquid slowly and not in a hurry
  • Avoid high calorie drinks like milkshakes, beer etc
