What are the cares that a patient should undergo after the Lap-Band® Treatment?

What are the facts about Lap-Band® Treatment?

Is Lap-Band® treatment effective after the surgery?

The Lap-Band® treatment is also known as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedure. This is an invasive weight loss surgery that is done in such a way that bands the stomach with an implanted prosthetic device. This device helps to divide the stomach into two pouches that are connected by the narrow passage and this helps to limit the food-intake capacity. This helps the patient to reduce their appetite and provide feeling of fullness.

Basically Lap-Band® Treatment has been approved by FDA for the weight loss surgery; this procedure is comprised of three parts:

  • Silicon or silastic band.
  • Reservoir or port
  • Tube that connects the band to the port.

The surgeon performs the surgery and places the Lap-Band® around the upper part of the stomach. After this surgery a small stomach pouch is formed just above the band and after this the larger part of the stomach remains below the band. In this process the reservoir part is placed just below the patient's surface fatty tissue and skin. The port and band remains inside the patient's body that are connected by the tube.

  • Surgeons inject saline into the port that inflates the band and this makes the passage of the stomach smaller, by further restricting food intake.
  • Helps to drain saline through the port that deflates the band this widens the passage into the stomach by allowing greater food intake.

After the Lap-Band® treatment this becomes important to have periodic official visits, this is necessary to adjust Lap-Band® . In this situation your doctor will pierce the skin with a needle or port just beneath the skin and according to the necessity injects or drains saline.

The Lap-Band® treatment also has certain advantages:

  • Lap-Band® is reversible; if necessary the device can be removed.
  • The anatomy is not permanently altered.
  • This surgery does not provide effects on the body's nutrient absorption
  • This surgery is less invasive, in this process stomach and intestines are not cut or rerouted.
  • There is less scaring because the procedure requires very little incisions.

With the help of Lap-Band® treatment the obese people gets help in reducing their overweight.
